The Influence of European Air Bags on Crash Injury Outcomes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The UK Co-operative Crash Injury Study currently includes data on 205 seat belted drivers from frontal impacts in which an air bag deployed; of these, 142 suffered some degree of injury. To detect the influence of frontal air bags, the distribution of injury over the body regions of these drivers was compared to that of a much larger group from vehicles without air bags. The injured drivers from air bag vehicles showed relatively fewer head injuries, especially fractures, and relatively more arm injuries. No abnormal types of injury or circumstances of injury were identified for the air bag group. Air bags generally appear to deploy at vehicle impact severities that pose a statistical risk of significant head injury, and also in a proportion of lower severity impacts. As a group, the air bag equipped vehicles were larger, more modem, and more often fitted with seat belt pretensioners than the non air bag vehicles, with an older and more male driving population.

Computer crash simulations in the development of child occupant safety policies.
OBJECTIVE To address the predictability of injury from air bag activation by use of crash simulation software. METHODS Using current, validated crash simulation software, the effect of air bag activation on injury risk was assessed for the 6-year-old child, both restrained and unrestrained. Results were compared with those for adult occupants in similar crash scenarios. RESULTS For the unre...

Air bags have been and continue to be an effective, lifesaving technology. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that air bags have saved almost 1,500 lives, with an estimated 569 lives saved in 1995 alone. However, the increasing availability of air bags in passenger vehicles and light trucks has seen a concomitant rise in the report of injuries related to ai...

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been monitoring and gathering information on air bag related injuries and fatalities in its data collection programs since air bags were introduced. As frontal air bag technology has progressed from barrier certified (a.k.a. first generation) to sled certified (a.k.a redesigned) and to advanced certified air bag systems, there has b...
متن کاملInfluence of Crash Pulse Duration on Injury Risk in Frontal Impacts Based on Real Life Crashes
To study the influence of crash pulse duration on injury risk, data of 272 real life frontal collisions with recorded crash pulses was used. 371 restrained occupants were included. It was found that compared with acceleration, the duration has a limited influence on injury risk. The study shows that the average pulse duration in cases with AIS2+ injuries was 7 % longer than in cases with AIS1 i...
